This production of the Merchant of Venice was set in the 1920’s. The era was chosen as it reflected , superficially, the shallow attitude to finance and romance in shown in the play. The costumes had more than  a slight touch of “The Boy Friend” about them while the setting reflected the period more by suggestion than any particular detail. It was a permanent structure with a few flown items  that allowed the play to flow smoothly. The upper level and the conventional side entrances made deliberate references to the format of the Globe Theatre.
Paul Shelley who played Shylock gave a particularly fine performance.
