“The Days of the Commune”
Directed by Antony Tuckey
“The Days of the Commune” by Bertold Brecht
Directed by Antony Tuckey, Liverpool Playhouse, 1972
This was a very complicated production of a very fast moving play. It is set in Paris, 1871. As in all Brecht it is built on an epic scale. We attempted to use the the space in a truly 3D way. The design was centred on a 30’ hand crank revolve on which were placed 2 permanent but pivoted elements: 2 Classical columns and a large slab of rock. Surrounding this was a 2 storey
scaffold structure which housed the band and was used for chases and for the sound it could create. There were a number of flown pieces: a detailed engraving of Paris and some smaller elements painted in a bright “Parisian” style. There was a conscious attempted to move away from “Brechtian” muted colours. The main purpose of the design was to enable the play to flow uninterrupted.
